How Mortigan Got His Groove Back

"Someone said he who knows he knows, knows nothing yeah
He who knows he knows nothing really knows
But I have searched and I never could find
A way to make my true self unwind
And while I sit here waiting to die
I can see what I am, can tell you why..."
- Spooky Tooth, Hangman Hang My Shell On A Tree

I thought I knew about all about stat priority. And gems and enchants. And Reforging.  Seemed pretty simple... especially since I never bothered to do any real digging into the subject.  In case I haven't left enough clues already, I'll just come out and say it: I don't pay much attention to the details. And the Devil, unfortunately for me, is in the details.

I've been monkeying around with things too much lately.  I've collected several shoulders, robes, rings, and whatnot, and I've been swapping them in and out in an attempt to create separate gear sets for Heroics and Raiding.  I had assumed (without doing any proper research, or course) that I wouldn't need much Hit in Heroics. I planned to use gear that was heavy on Haste and Crit, but light on Hit.  I figured doing so would give me faster, bigger hits, and overall increase my DPS on Heroic trash. It seemed like a really good plan, but in execution, performed terribly. The more I monkeyed around, the worse my DPS got. I watched my Heroic Trash DPS drop from 10K to 8K. Might as well wear my Wrath Purples at that point. I hit the training dummies last night (without using elixirs) and confirmed 8K DPS. ABSOLUTELY WRETCHED.  I had been previously been doing better with worse gear.

I needed help. Someone to look over my gear, tell me what I screwed up, and what I needed to do to fix it. So I climbed the mountain to speak to the all-knowing Oracle (Google), and discovered www.askmrrobot.com.  Mr. Robot said he could help. I decided to trust him. After all, it was easier to trust him than do real research on Elitist Jerks or Warlock's Den - both of which I can only tolerate after a long comforting visit with every Warlock's best friend, Mr. Chivas Regal. Anyway, Mr. Robot decided that I should enchant and reforge for Hit and Haste, in that order. Throw out some purple and yellow gems for more red Brilliant Infernos. I followed Mr. Robot's advice like a... ummm... robot. Did everything he said, just like he said to do it. My mind kept saying, "This is really dumb," but also "it's not expensive to put it back," and "your DPS was going down the toilet anyway." So I just went for it.  When I was done, I was very near the Hit Cap. Haste was nearly 2% down from where it was, and Crit 3% down. "Boy, the giant sucking sound from THIS set-up is going to be heard all the way to Nagrand," I thought as I headed over to the Training Dummies.

And then I proceeded to set the Dummy on fire, and something magical happened. The DPS gods smiled upon Morty, and I found myself immediately edging up to 12K DPS without elixirs.  Downing a few elixirs or Flask of the Draconic Mind would have easily pushed me beyond the 12K mark, and in a decent group with some buffs thrown in, I could SET THE WORLD ON FIRE!  And these numbers are without all the best enchants that Mr. Robot recommended (it will cost me another 10K to upgrade all gear - donations welcome!).

So Cowls off to you, Mr. Robot. You ROCK!  My next step is to swap out some of my other gear that is already hit-heavy (the stuff I was saving for raids), optimize it on Mr. Robot again, and test against my current set-up. A good project for tonight.

I also finally became a Transmutation Master last night.  I had periodically seen guys in Stormwind yelling about how they're Transmutation Masters, but I never got around to looking into the matter.  But last night I was recruited by a guildie hungry for some Elementium Deathplate, and he needed PILES of Truegold to get it done. Discovering my Truegold was off Cooldown, he was willing to invest in me becoming a Transmutation Master in exchange for the Truegold. Sounded like a plan to me.  He helped figure out what I needed to do, and within a few minutes, the deal was done.  I was able to generate Truegold x2 for him. A couple other Alchemists later, and he was forging his Deathplate.

So regemmed, reenchanted, and reforged with much better DPS and Transmutation Master to top it off, Mortigan is back on top! If you need to get YOUR groove back, you just might want to ASK MR. ROBOT.

EDIT: Read TheGrumpyElf's reply to this post. His additional info friggin better than my original content.

  2. I like Mr. Robot, I found it a bit ago and played around with it some, it is good, however I do not like how it set priorities sometimes.

    I mentioned my concerns to a friend and he suggested an addon called reforganator to me. This thing works wonders. No longer do I need to try and figure out what is the perfect set of things to reforge to get to hit cap and my first haste marker, this always did it for me and damn near perfect.

    Sometimes it would take away from one place and I would think, but I need the hit, yet when it took the 60 hit from one item it give me 46 back from another making me as close to the hit cap as possible while now giving me an extra 14 crit. Small amount? Yes. But it is better to have an extra 14 crit then an extra 14 hit that serves no purpose what so ever.

    Congrats on getting things back in order. Maybe check on reforganator, it is a winner for sure.

    Also, remember the key for DPS when it comes to gemming.

    Only gem main stats.
    Only split gem if you are getting +20 main stat (intel, agil, str) and only one gem will be split.
    Otherwise ignore socket bonuses for main stats only.

    Transmute masters are good money makers, have fun with it.

    Here is a tip for you.

    Do not even worry about selling your truegold cooldown. If your server is anything like mine there is a much better use of your cooldown (unless you where lucky enough to get a truegold proc that is).

    Note: If you are selling your truegold cooldown, always have a truegold premade. That way when they give you mats you give them the truegold. Later, you can make the truegold and not have to give them your procs.

    If you make it for them and it procs you have to either give it to them (which would be the right thing) or offer it to them super cheap. Better to just trade the bar and make it later so if you get the proc you can keep the extra truegolds.

    Now to an easy way to make money, same cooldown as TG sadly.

    Transmute elements

    Volatile Life - 7g
    Volatile Air - 39g

    Buy 15 life, go to uldum, transmute to air, sell on market. If you get lucky, you proc an extra 15 volatiles.

    Money laid out = 105 gold.
    Money made without proc = 585 gold
    Money made with proc = 1170 gold.

    I've heard it is supposed to proc every time, I've done it tons and only had it proc once. Just a warning.

    You can do this daily.

    The only thing better is if you get lucky with a truegold proc. This is less expenditure and less risk. Just always transmute to whatever volatile is selling for the most.

    Uldum = Always get Air
    Deepholm = Always get Earth
    Hyjal = Always get Fire
    Vash'ir = Always get Water

    That way you do not have to play with your chances being random which one you get.

    Enjoy.

  4. I don't think MrRobot likes my Warlock. For some reason he tells me to switch my Haste enchants for Mastery. Which seems very odd considering that Mastery is the worst stat for a Destruction Warlock. Why would I want Mastery on gloves when I can get Haste? (Or Spellpower.)

    He also tells me to re-gem my chest to.. eh.. the gems that are in it.

    Other times for other chars it seems fine. So maybe he really just hates my Warlock ;)

  5. Hey, I'm one of the people behind Mr. Robot and stumbled upon this post, and I LOVED it, especially where you SET THE WORLD ON FIRE!

    As for the Warlock that thinks Mr. Robot hates him, it isn't so! He thinks you're the master of the universe, that's why mastery is so high! Anyway, the default stat weights are set to be the most agreed upon set based on a lot of EJ reading. But if you don't like those weights, you can always change them to put mastery lower.

    If you have any questions, don't be shy to stop on by our forums and ask questions. Mr. Robot will help any meatbag that stops on by :)

  6. I was mad because it wanted me to reforge my druid's haste to mastery, and mastery for resto druids is the pits. I raged and told him he was WRONG WRONG WRONG... then I did some research and realized that I was over my first haste breakpoint and too far away to reach the second one, and the rest of that haste was doing me little to no good considering how I avoid casting direct heals. It was MORE beneficial to go for mastery even if mastery was butts; at least I got something out it rather than the big fat nothing I'd been getting!

    Also, setting the world on fire is a Good Thing.
